The NAACP-DC Education Committee seeks to partner with Black community organizations and men of color to launch the “Boys of Color Mentoring Initiative” at Whittier Education Campus, in Ward 4, NW, DC.

Overview

  • Data from student surveys reveal the following grim statistics about Black boys attending Whittier EC:

  • 95 percent of Black boys in grades 3 through 8 do not have a father present in the home.

  • Nearly 80 % of these boys do not interact with positive Black men (including their fathers) on a regular basis.

  • More than half of these boys say they do not have a positive Black male in their lives to look up to.

What can you do?

  • Help the NAACP DC reverse this devastating reality.

  • Volunteer weekly or bi-weekly for a minimum of 2 hours to mentor a Black boy at Whittier EC.

The days for mentoring are Monday’s and Wednesday’s and the three available time slots are:

  • 9am – 10am

  • 3pm to 5pm

  • 4pm to 6pm

Mentors can opt to serve one or two hours during the afternoon time block. (It is preferred that men serve for the entire 2 hours). Please contact LaFonda Willis at education.naacpdc@gmail.com or 202-870-0924, by Thursday, February 25, 2016.

The initiative launches Monday, February 29, 2016.
